Nostalgia’s a hell of a drug.

Chris Claremont’s been doing the nostalgia X-Men books for a bit. In this book, he’s expanding on Gambit joining the team.

After a little talking about possibly joining the team with tiny Ororo, Remy heads back to New Orleans. One of Gambit’s street children is in over her head in a poker game, and he goes to get her out of it. Someone named Suzerain is interested in her and Remy, and hires Bullseye to get them both for her. Events occur.

Claremont writes a solid capes story. There’s a reason he is so attached to the history of the X-Men. You don’t need me to tell you this.

And this is a solid start to a solid capes story. Gambit’s a great character, and Claremont’s got a good voice for him.

The Gill art is expressive, especially in the fight scene with Bullseye.. Valenza’s colors really help them pop, especially in the world of Mardi Gras. It elevates the book and meshes well with Claremont’s writing.

Then again:

Then again, in the above art, they’re only taking a little bit of money while cleaning out a safe. Boy, I hope somebody got fired for that blunder. (This is not a huge deal. Do not act like this is a huge deal.)

This is a perfectly solid book. As a stand alone issue, it’s an enjoyable time. My hope is that the rest of the series is able to elevate from here.
