X-Men: Omega Red Dawn, which is a collection of the X-Men Infinity Comics published earlier this year, deals with an attack by Omega Red on the X-Men, leading to the abduction of Charles Xavier. The X-Men and Magneto come to a truce, recruit Mystique, and go on a mission to save Professor X via fighting fake Colossuses & chasing Omega Red to space.

This looks like a classic X-Men story. It’s structured like a classic X-Men story. It just lacks the verve of classic X-Men stories. At no point does this really hit me as exciting or intriguing. The plot is basic and moves in a perfunctory manner, the interactions between characters are thin, and the art is just a solid imitation of the art of the era. It gives me nothing else to latch onto. This isn’t bad. It’s just average, and is average in an uninteresting way.

If you are jonesing for a flashback to what you consider the glory days of the late 80s/early 90s X-Men, you may find enjoyment in this book. If you’re looking for anything that breaks the mold, that moves in a way that will surprise you, or is really memorable in any way, you should look elsewhere.
